When budgets are tight, choosing to buy refurbished equipment — or overhauling your existing kit — could save you big. Discover which option is best for your site.

On a mission to reduce costs and stretch budgets, many manufacturers are eyeing up second-hand equipment and machine overhauls as affordable alternatives to buying new.

If that’s you, you might be asking yourself what the differences are and which option is best suited to your operations.

Read on to find out more about what these alternatives look like and how you could benefit.

Second-hand machines, first-class performance

Used machines don’t always have the best reputation. Because they’re pre-owned, operators sometimes assume they’re more likely to break or be tired out.

But this is a myth, one of many surrounding refurbished processing machines. Professionally refurbished by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or an accredited third party, second-hand machines are no less likely to break than their new counterparts.

In fact, because they’ve been refurbished to factory standards, they’re likely more reliable than a machine that hasn’t been serviced or maintained recently.

We won’t go over all the benefits of buying a refurbished unit — you can read about those here. What we will say is that in circumstances where overhauling your existing equipment isn’t an option — say, for example, you’re expanding production or opening a new site — installing refurbished units will save you big money (sometimes up to 50% off the price of new) without any of the drawbacks people mistakenly associated with second-hand units.

Consider refurbished equipment if…

…you’re expanding your operations or opening a new site and require additional equipment but would rather make your budget go as far as possible.

Overhauling your furnaces — and your production

You don’t need to buy the newest make or model to unlock cutting-edge capabilities. Often, your existing furnaces can be overhauled to bring them in line with the latest specifications.

What do we mean by this?

Imagine your production is a computer. From time to time, it’s important to download new software, keeping the system up to date and your machine running smoothly. It’s the same with your vacuum furnaces; a system upgrade here or a new part there could significantly reduce the risk of breakdowns and improve your machines’ performance.

Keeping abreast of compliance

There’s the compliance side of things, too. Regulations are updated for a reason, keeping our operations responsible and our people safe. Sometimes, a new regulation might place undue pressure on your operating capabilities (or challenge your operation’s compliance).

Upgrading certain parts of your machine, if not overhauling it entirely, will ensure your site is operating safely and legally without you having to face disruption and pricey new equipment.

Consider overhauling your furnaces if…

…you want to upgrade your site’s capabilities without forking out for a brand new furnace. Your existing furnaces have served you well, and a state-of-the-art control system or reconditioned hot zone will transform their performance for a price you can swallow.

Helping you to make the right decisions for 30+ years

For over three decades, businesses like yours have turned to us to help them keep their operations running. Often this takes the form of new furnace products and aftercare services, but it’s also been just that: help in the form of advice, recommendations, a sounding board against which you can voice your thoughts and concerns.

Processing equipment is always going to be expensive when you get to the till. We encourage you to talk to us about your targets, your current setup, and the gap between the two so that we can help you to make the best decisions for your operations.

We’ve written extensively about our refurbishment services recently so we won’t retread that here. As for furnace overhauls, we can upgrade all aspects of vacuum furnace technology:

  • Hot zones – graphite, all-metallic and composite designs

  • Control systems – from basic instrumentation replacement to the latest PLC/PC based supervisory data acquisition (SCADA) packages

  • Vacuum pumping solutions – improved speed and ultimate vacuum levels

  • Spare parts supply

  • Leak detection

  • Emergency and routine service support

  • Training
